Kingmaker Campaign - Country of Cabemigorus

Castien's Journal 2

I know I don’t write these entries often enough but my work keeps me steadily occupied and find little time to add to my journal. I should certainly try and make more effort.

However, things have been well and lots happened within the last years. Firstly Ariel has come into my life. I sent a formal letter to her to apologise for make actions and making amends but also inviting her along to the Fort Tuskwater in attempt to possibly patch things up. When I decided to flee from the commitment that father put on my shoulders, I was young and foolish instead of stepping up and being honorable. Ariel agreed to my invitation and despite me believing nothing would ever happen, I was proven wrong the minute she stepped from the carriage. I instantly fell for her beauty, loveliness and her perfection. My actions had put me in a bad situation as I had no hope , she could ever feel the same after me rejecting her. She stayed for a long time so I made sure to spend as much time as it was possible with. She was such a lovely creature that I found myself drawn to her with every minute I spend by her side. While she did seem to enjoy my company, I did not believe she felt the same as me but regardless when it was time to leave for buisness, I did gamble to steal one kiss, which she returned. When I returned I spend more time with her, unbelieving that she blessed me with her grace and love, and after another few weeks/month I proposed. The moment she accepted was one of the happiest I’ve ever experienced and I still feel the same after the years that are already past us. She has born me a three wonderful children, which I love with all my heart and even though I’m clumsy in showing it I’m the luckiest man alive to have them.

But a lot of other things happened as well. The city has established wonderfully despite an attack of a huge owlbear, which caused many tragic losses among my people. After the wedding in which the king raised me to the status of a Duke, he was assassinated on his return home and rumor has it that Ruc’dahl, who had mysteriously vanished, is the perpetrator. I never should have given him my trust but it’s my duty to find out the truth. The King’s brother inherited the throne and he is a careful man as it seems. The Realm of the Silver Dragon is no longer free of taxes and 20 % of all our earnings are spent on it. It was bound to happen sooner than later but I fear how it will affect my people.

We also had our problems with a Bard within the city, spreading bad propaganda causing a number of towns folk to doubt the reign but after a very skilled debate with Solania the situation resolved rather quickly and the man had been put to a test in which he never succeeded. Instead he cowardly murdered our high priestess for which he was trialed.

My friends seem to be doing well in their lives as well. Girky has married and is raising kids on his own while Solania appears to be holding her love life casually. Galials seems to have a taken a fancy in Shalia (?) and I’m glad for my friends.

After the high priestess died, a new priest was sent to us by the order. He goes by the name Logaan (?) and he is a strange, strange man. He follows the same faith as I but it sounds to me that he does questions Iomedae’s ways in a way she should not do. I believe the Elders of the Order were trying to rid themselfs of him. He’s shown to be a loyal companion though so I try to ignore his little irregularities in our faith as best as possible.

Exploring the Wilds

Solania’s journal time.
It’s been quite a while since we last had a restful moment to update our journal so where to start.

Castien got married to Ariel, amid much fanfare. I won’t dwell on that too long here, since I.. .err… may have drunk a bit much quite early on, and don’t really remember anything. No that’s not it, definetily not.

What I do know is that we have met a woman called Elga, she appears to be a hag, with her green skin and all that, but from what we gather when we talked to her, it’s simply a matter of her having gotten older. What race she might be that turns green as she get older however, I have no idea. What we do know is that she can cast spells, but as I didn’t see much in the way of a library, I’m going to assume that she’s a Sorcerer or a Witch. (She didn’t have any animals unlike Bongle, but I guess that her scarecrow could be it). In any case, we seem to have struck up a friendship with her, and we’ve promised that we’ll help her try and restore her looks, or at least make it so that people and children don’t taunt her when she makes her way to Fort Tuskwater. We also delivered her some mushrooms that she needed.

We’ve also had a small encounter with her neighbour, who was a mad hermit who heard voices. When we came across him, he seemed docile enough, but that all changed that same night. He attacked us in the early hours of the morning, and we fended him off, unfortunately killing him in the process. As he expired he said something along the lines of “Finally the voices have been silenced”. I seem to have been the only one hearing that though, and I really don’t like the sound of it. I’m keeping my mouth shut however.

Further developments have happened as well. We’ve cleared Candlemere Island of the Will’o’Wisps that were present, and we found an old ruin that was dedicated to Yogsothoth. Not exactly what I’d call a friendly place, but Vanessa insisted that it was a place where the leylines came together, so with her help we have now establied a small community there, starting with creating her a Mage Tower. Candlemere is now a small community not too far away from Fort Tuskwater. So our kingdom is expanding yet again.

We have also found someone called “The Dancing Lady”. We freed her from what we thought was captivity in her keep, and I accepted ownership of the keep. As it turns out however, she wasn’t quite as innocent as we could have hoped for. Apparently she’s some sort of evil and corrupting fey presence in the area. I’m sure she’ll make a reappearance and cause trouble, but we’ve been unable to find her again.

We did find a dead Unicorn. I suspect she might be involved since when we questioned the corpse as to what killed her, it was “Unequaled corrupted beauty”. Unfortunately I wasn’t there at the time, so couldn’t share my insight.

Other events have happened as well, we have saved a grove and pond from destruction by lumberjacks (I threatened them off! Scary Solania is scary! Woooo!) and with some Feather Tokens that we found, we planted new trees to replace the lost ones. That seemed to please the inhabitant, a nixie called Melianse. It all turned out for the best though, or so we hope, as the lumberjacks seem to be sticking to the agreement to leave her groove alone, and she’s letting them continue logging in the area.
We did however, afterwards, head off to meet her friend, a Dryad called Tiressia. That was a bit more interesting as we went to her sister’s home and killed Scythetree that had taken root in the area. Not a pleasant tree, and as it turns out, the dead sister had died because of a love-triangle (or should a quadrant) involving the Dancing Lady, Tiressia, Tiressia’s sister and some mortal human. We never really did get to the bottom of it, as the details were kept a bit vague by Syriana. I suspect she’s not really too keen on telling us everything. Can’t say I blame her.

We had trouble with a bard as well, turns out that he was a rumormonger and hell-raiser from Mivon, and not only that, but even after we’d given him a task to prove his loyalty to our kingdom (as he was riling up the crowds), he charmed the guards, came back and poisoned the High Priestess. He was caught and he was sentenced to death. He has now been killed. (He was poisoned as a sort of poetic justice).

For now, I think that just about covers it, apart from 2 important events: Rucdalh has gone missing, and has been missing for a long enough time that we’ve decided to approach Alexei Chekov about becoming our new Spymaster (since we sponsored his merchant company, he should be reasonably interested, and he certainly seems well connected). The second is the rumors that we keep hearing about Trolls near the southern Border. Galial was sent there and has been gone for several months, trying to find out if the rumors are true or not.

Burrowing through Barrows

Seems like it’s time to put the kingdommaking behind us for now. More urgent matters have appeared that would require our attention.
It was brought to our attention that apparently the Stag Lord had risen again as an undead. I’m sure that’s an exaggeration, but never the less some investigation (scouting) on my part showed that there was at least some truth to it.
In the nearby lands called the Kamelands, I found a great furrow in a hill. When I entered it, I found a large colony of Bats, and a quick question showed that further in was a Barrow. Apparently full of undead.
Discretion being the better part of Valor, I got out of there, as fast as I could, and back to friendlier grounds.
However, when we returned, to clear out the mess, the poor bats had turned undead as well. When we ventured into the tomb, we came across a large collection of undead, and we were in for the fight of our lives. I don’t think we’ve ever been as close as that, to breathing our last.
Thankfully we defeated them, and we found some interesting goods left in the tomb. A magical weapon that changes to suit the wielder (with a particular ability to kill Fey) and a magical ring that would allow one to survive without food, water or even air. To this day, magic still surprises me.

It does make me long for the life on the road again. I wasn’t cut out for settled life. Sure, it’s interesting some of the time, but everyonce in a while, you’d need to stretch your legs. Perhaps the time has come to return to our roots, and move around a bit, and explore the Kamelands?

Galail, Marshall Ranger

The last few months have been fairly hectic. Our country continues to grow exponentially, and because of this I have to make sure I extend my forces.

I must admit at this point that I purposefully extended them a little more than was required, but I am thinking about future growth.

Shelaya seems to have become a prime recruiting officer by default. So far she’s managed to attract almost 15 extra marshals. Although, she is playing on the ranger side more. Which I am quite happy with. I applied to lord Castien for an extension of the watch tower around the gold mine, or permission to construct a fort in another area. The purpose of which was for administration and training.
I say administration, barracks would probably be more appropriate. The force has to have somewhere centralised for that kind of thing. Where reports get collected, people are trained and… traditions are held.

Noctish approached me when I was down his neck of the plains, mentioned that he had been raiding across the border into no-man’s land and further on into Mevon, he said it was to keep bandits down, and I have to be honest he is certainly having an effect with his elite fighting force. But I need to ask him to think a bit more before attacking. El’ara and Caddis Came back through for the tournament in august, said they had been set upon by a force of kobolds.

As it is we currently have plausible deniability for that force which is just as well if they cross the lines into Mevon. But a suggestion of a little bit more… descrimination before attacking people may be required. I’ll ask Noctish myself. He doesn’t like me much its true, but we’ll see how it goes. He has asked if my rangers can carry some form of symbol to avoid any accidents by his force. I have thought on this, and I think the symbol of my order, the dark eagle order, the swooping Dark Grey Eagle clutching an axe would be appropriate.

In addition, I have decided to put all the recruit Marshal’s through the same program I went through as a novice in my order. It is well rounded, teaches survival techniques, tracking, hunting, and reasoning, in addition to instilling a sense of moral justice I hope. These are all qualities a good ranger needs.

Pardon me, I mean a good Marshal. Although, there are elements of both duties that reflect in each one.
Still. The countryside could do worse for not having a specifically ranger-training orientated force. We need outriders and scouts, we need investigators, but above all we need people to defend the swathes of land that we can claim. Garres and Sneed’s forces keep the roads towns and villages in good order, we help there as well. But there are large parts of the area that are just home to vulnerable farmers, and the outer edges of the fiefdom, border on nothing, forests, or plains or hills that have no habitation. These areas need to be kept in check. Scouted, policed if you will.

It’s due in part to this that we were able to ascertain the location of a problematic burial mound that may house a large army of un-dead. I intend to investigate this with Castien, Solania and the others this month. It’s not far from our borders and as such should be checked. The green dragon is further away I’d rather not let it be for now, but this possible un-dead force is more pressing.

Especially along with the rumour of the stag lord remerging. Although it sounds completely unfounded, it would not be wise to ignore it.

Marshall's Log 2

Sareneth

My duties and the training of my Marshall force seem to have settled into a normal routine now. the Rangers are coming along well I think. at the moment our priority is making sure all our outlying villages are in good order and protected. Lord Castien agreed to build a watchtower at the half way point along the Tuskwater road to Olegton, this should provide the miners there some defence.

However as we arrived to start construction, it appeared the miners had decided to go on strike. Their complaints involved the provision of supplies to thier camp, and most impotrtantly Beer Supplies.

Solania came along with us to speak to the miners and a deal was struck, we agreed to vary thier food supplies and add beer to it, if they went back to work. We added the stipulation that if they were drunk on duty, lord Castien would not be pleased, but they were more than welcome to enjoy the supplies on their off shifts. We organised a supply train with olegton and things seems to have been resolved.

However, Olegton appears to have become a bit of a draw for the lawless. Svetlana and her advisors have requested we add Olegton to the Feifdom so that they can enjoy some law protection. Lord Castien is thinking on it.

Erastus
The kingdom was blessed this month. A bloom of flowers along the edges of Lake Tuskwater and some of the feeder streams was taken as a blessing from none other than Erastil himself! The people had the midsummer celebration and all seems to be well here. We further secured the feifdoms northern borders by begining the construction of barracks at Olegton, which formerly assimilated itself into the fiefdom this month. There was some disagreement form the lower elements up in olegton but nothing serious. Im hoping the gambling dens will stick around anyway. I may like to try my own luck. I chose to forgo the brothel. It’d be more fun to chase and tumble an independant young lady than have to pay for the pleasure.

I have heard tell that Lord Castien’s interest is arriving next month and that some form of tournament may be considered. This may be an opportunity for the workers and residents to relax a bit. We shall see.

a dilapidated pirate ship crashed into the port this month aswell. It bore those mercenaries that Solania had hired a few months back. The Eleven Woman and the Barbarian type. They had a disagreement with the town guards which ended with this El’ara punching one of the town guards in the nose. We bade them calm down a bit and solania came to speak with them about their early return.

Needless to say it was resolved with the slightest of discomfort on the feisty elf’s part but the wharr will be repaired and we have also acquired a lot of materials and a new ship for the town.

Fairly Profitable all in all.

Arodus

Lord Castiens prospective arrived this month. She is being guested at the castle. She seems to be some very rich merchants daughter. Attractive enough I’ll grant, so Lord Castien I’m sure will be more than interested in her.

A boat

A Tournament was hastily planned and held in her name. I entered the Archery and the grand melee. I wasn’t performing at my best, but i did see some new prospectives that i may chat to later. The country is getting larger and i may need to get some more help out there. These two farmers seem like likely types. I wonder if they would be amenable to the suggestion.

I also entered thewood cutting contest, after all I am from the river kingdoms further south so i thought it best to show face in the traditional competition.

The competition is tight but I’m sure it will be fun.
The winner of the grand melee was required to fight the champion – Gurky. It was a humerous match, Rucdalh won the melee contest quite well, but when he faced up against Gurky he was fully outclassed. The match only took about a minute, but i must admit it was humerous to see Rucdalh’s pride getting tossed about a bit in the ring. Rucdalh is a good fighter, but no match for Gurky.

I’m sure Sir Garess Was very pleased to see Rucdalh bounced around as well.

Casiten's Log 1st entry

I decided to start a log now that the king tasked me with ruling the land. I am glad that I’m not alone with though. The weeks and months of exploring the Green Belt were quite sucessful and it was a huge help for me when I had to make decision as to who should support me while making something out of the green belt. I decided to start a city after consulting with the others and the left over of the Stag Lords Fortress are quite handy as a foundation for a Castle. Personally I do not need a castle but as long as it’s has a use for the city, who am I to not build one.

The construction seems to be going quite well and I’m pleased that people started moving to Tuskwater Point, which is a sign that the other and me made some decent decisions even if the first winter month looked to be a challenge but sending Galial out to hunt as well as Solania off to the Kobolds made things easier. The Kobolds are great allies and I’m thankful for the support they’ve lent us.

I also need to consider the other creatuers that we met and encountered on our exploration. I do hope that claiming the lands where the boggart as well the hermit and the temple is will let my desire to protect them come true. Having Galial as Marshall is already a step forward and with Solania’s talent to make friends it should ease out some difficulties.

It seems that Rhael has picked up his own buisness while guarding Vanessa. It’s good he and the others are building a foundation for their future. I supposed Girky and Rucdalh will soon pick up plans…well in Girky’s case I really can’t predict it.

The settling into these lands and managing them is a huge challenge and while it brings some aspects back to my life I had hoped to get rid off but I shall not make mistakes again and the ones I made I will try to correct. I do not how this will turn out but I wish for the best.

I need to think about setting up a few rules as well as request the others to keep me updated with reports what is happening and I have to look into training a few man so I can establish protection for the people of these lands…

Marshall's log : Ranger Galial
Kuthona

Castien Birren appears to be Brevoy’s newest noble recruit. He has been given stewardship of the Green belt lands that we’ve spent the last few months exploring. There was a large feast of honour and today we set out to make a more permanent base for the Fiefdom as its called.

Looks like I’ve got some work around here to do yet still.

Abadius

Settlers have been streaming in constantly for the last month since we first made a start on the old stag fort. Its in a prime defensive position and i think once we get a road up to Olegs and the Rustland highway it’ll be a good trade hub.

My duties now include Marshalling of the outlying lands. It was a roll I took eagerly as it manages to keep me out of the hustle and bustle of construction of a town and away from some of the politics for a time. However the lands are quiet. Word hasn’t got out yet.

Calistril

Damn its cold here in winter.
We spent the last few months building up the town a bit. We have a mill once the river unfreezes. Castiens Settled lands expand every month, and with that farmland and families. Part of my duties is to make sure those outlying farmsteads are kept lawfully and not prone to any resurgence of Banditry. As such I’ve recruited some more people to help me form the spare populous. I’ll have to get more as the lands become further settled. So far my training to them has been the same as the Dark Eagle Order that I grew up in. They seem to take to it well… Very well in fact. Maybe i’ll make Rangers of them yet.

Note to self – Speak to Solania about these notices that appeared around town.

Pharast

Some strange gnome types arrived at our gates in the last few weeks. They wanted permission to work the silver mine the Soothscale clan Kobalds live in. I was not privy to the discussions with them, but for all intents and purposes Solania got them talking and they seem to be happy.

Of course this brought to us an influx of traders once they realised the Silversmith Gnomes were here.

Rucdalh appears to be recruiting some odd denizens of Tuskwater point to his cause, whatever that may be. A few beggers and worryingly the young pickpockets of the town. Naturally of course Sir Garres is not pleased with the developments. There will be trouble there soon i’m thinking. Meanwhile, Rhael seems to have effectively minimised damage that the young miss Vendledale may achieve. The two of them are getting on well. I am a little worried at Rhael’s new logging operations, but I do not feel they will endanger Syriana’s lands. Hopefully it’ll stay that way. The forest spirit unerves me a lot.

Solania for some reason is patroning random adventurer groups. Its her money I guess, I’m just lost as to her reasoning. Unless she’s looking for something out in the world.

The Ranger Marshalls that I recruited continue to train well. Eldric, Ardis, Aldrey, Vlad and Dimitri. After May i think i’ll have to do some further recruiting.

Gozran

Thankfully Spring is in full swing again and the temperature is becoming more bearable. The ports in the city were finally completed recently and thats helping the city folk unload and trade easier.

We also finally connected our sattlite town to The Rustland road. This means more work for Myself and Garres as we now have traders that can move down to Tuskwater and go through there on thier river trading missions.
Svetlana and Oleg have been very busy in the last little while. They now have a fledgling village at Olegs outpost. Apparently they’ve asked for us to help them out with laws and guardship It will be good to have a force on the Rustland road security wise, and i think i can sort out a messenger network if his Lordship demands it. warning system might be good… possibly some form of beacons along the Tuskwater road so that we can send troops if trouble appears.

Of course the issue is that Olegton as its now called, is simply too far away from Tuskwater point to allow quick reinforcement.

Note to self – suggest to his lordship fortifications at Olegton be prioritised. I already believe he wants to set up another garrison there.

whilst we’re at it, it may be an idea to put a watchtower near the gold mine village… just in case.

Rucdalh continues to be at odds with Garres. I must try and remain neutral there, or just stick tyo my patrols. The countryside is more peaceful.

I think Ceredwyn and myself are getting along fine. She hasn’t tried to bite off my hand in a month and more. she may be slightly bad tempered but she is a definate ally to be counted on.

Desnus

Although Garres is not happy about it, I must admit this month that Rucdalh’s informant network came up pretty well this month. He recieved word that some small time bandits were planning to attack one of the outlying farm villages. We were able to get there in very timely fashion. Just in time to see the four men about to start thier attack. I arrested them and we brought them back to Tuskwater point for Garres.

He was not happy that we did not invite him along. When i told him that the outer regions were my greatest concern and that I would rather not leave the town unpoliced. He took offense. Rucdalh’s remarks did not help either. I swear that Elf goes out of his way to tweak Garres nose.

Anyway, justice was served. I spoke to Garres afterwards and mentioned that I was willing to work with him in these matters but that today’s issue was one that required a fast response. Garres would have taken most of the garrison if he’d been allowed and that would have delayed me and my Marshal squad. We can move through the countryside well enough without 50 guardsmen trailing.

He understood my reasoning i think and we offered to stay informed. He is a man very much taken up by organisation i think, but after a while im sure he’ll settle down.

If he intends to stay in the fiefdom for the future that is.

Note to self – Speak to Solania, regarding possible information networking with her hired mercenaries Adventurer groups.

Final Session(1) - Season 1

It would seem that the Green Belt has a new ruler. LONG LIVE LORD CASTIEN! MAY HIS REINS BE LONGLASTING, AS I’VE NO DOUBT THAT HE’LL SOON BE UNDER THE YOKE OF A WIFE!

Hmm, that came out less heroic than I expected it would have.

Anyways, that is the decision. Most of the group voted for Castien, I even had her down as my second choce (after myself naturally), based on her previous experience in the noble heights of society.
I suppose it’s the diplomats life for Solania. Oh well, I do like meeting new people and making friends. If nothing else, it should certainly keep the Bleaching at bay. Now if only the voice would be quiet. – Although I have to admit that being a Magister of Magical Research sounds interesting as well.
It’s been getting louder lately I think… Perhaps it’s trying to take over once more. I’m fighting it and winning at the moment, but will that last? I only hope that shoudl I break, it won’t be at a time where I/it can cause too much mischief.

In any case, now is not the time for such gloomy thoughts. Now is the time for rejoicinng and celebrating and taunting Castien.

Second to last Session, Season one

We’ve finally finished our exploration of the area, ending with the fantastic discovery of a Gold Mine.. An abandoned one, that would seemingly be quite productive if we can get it up and running.
We’ve found farmlands, and robbed cairns (though we DID give them something to appease the spirits, in case we desecrated holy ground).
All that needs to be done now it seems is for a ruler to be decided.

We shall wait to see the decision.

Solania's Adventure Journal issue 9 and 10.

Well, we found out who let out the Owlbear. That was the Stag Lord, so after we’d finished mopping up his minions, we joined forces with the Kobolds, who were battling both Owlbear and Bandits. In the end we ended up killing the owlbear and most of the Bandits there, before 2 of the Bandits locked themselves inside the Owlbear’s cage. To which I broke the lock, so they couldn’t get out. (We did spare their lives though).

The Bandit Lord himself then decided to interfere. He attacked, along with the once-noble Knight Felgrin Sneed. We killed the Bandit Lord (or rather I DID, just as I DID with the Owlbear) and the Knight surrendered. We heard his tale, and decided that we would help him. We have now donated 1000 gold to his cause, so that he can go back and face the charges, as he seems convinced that he’ll be able to find the proof he needed in order to be acquitted. – Should he be acquitted, he has sworn himself to our cause.
The same goes for the surviving bandits. Our little nation seems to be growing by the day.

After turning in all the goods we found at the Fort to Oleg, so that we have a bit more ready cash, we have decided to explore the remaining area. We found some rather nasty traps (which Girky promptly stepped on), and as they were so well hidden that even most humans wouldn’t notice, we decided to follow the tracks of the trapper. We came across his dead body, causing us to wonder what had happened.
We think we know, as the next day, my trap finally paid off! We now know a Faerie Dragon, and a Grig! Both of whom Girky captured, by leaping out of a rather tall tree, causing him to be hurt. – I suspect Girky’s been sneaking off to eat my sandwiches…. In any case, we now know them. (We decided to let them go, though I had to use a Sleep spell on Girky as he turned aggressive).

Apparently as well, Rucdalh and Galial seem to be suffering from some sort of disease that they caught off the Mites. Thankfully it seems as if the Faerie Dragon and the Grig knows someone who can help, so we’re on our way there now.
